"Every child has the right to be protected from economic exploitation."
"Every child has the right to
education."
"Every child has the right to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of health."
"No child may be disadvantaged because of its sex."
The International Day of Children`s Rights takes place on November 20, and has done every year since 1989. That is because it was on November 20 1989 that 191 nations belonging to the United Nations signed an important convention (agreement). The recognition of children’s rights is an important prerequisite if people are live together in
peace. Because children are not as strong as adults and cannot defend themselves as well if they suffer an injustice, they need special protection. Around one hundred years ago, many countries realised this and wrote the so-
called "Declaration of the Rights of the Child". Now the UN has expanded and improved this "Declaration of Geneva" of 1924. The Convention on the Rights of the Child has 54 articles. Among other things, it states that children have to be protected from exploitation and violence, and that all governments should make sure they are. Governments should also ensure that children do not starve any more, that they are not forced to do child labour and that they are not mistreated. However, sad to say, children still suffer a lot from violence, injustice and exploitation despite this convention.
