This parliament is made up of representatives from different European states and was founded in 1958. Following the establishment and expansion of the
European Union, the number of delegates has now grown to 785. The parliament is elected every five years by the eligible voters in the EU member states. Each of the 27 member states can send a certain number of delegates to the parliament depending on the size of its population. The largest group is formed by the 99 delegates from Germany. The parliament’s administrative body is based in Luxembourg; the parliament itself sits in Strasbourg. Together with the
Council of the European Union, it can pass laws. For example, it has the power to help decide on issues regarding the EU
budget,
education,
environmental protection, health care and
cultural matters. Many decisions can only be taken with the approval of the European Parliament, such as the accession of new members to the EU or the appointment of the members and president of the
EU Commission.
