A parliament is a body representing the people. "Parliamentarianism" is the term used for the form of government or rule carried out mainly by representatives elected by the people. In Germany, these representatives form the Germany
Bundestag. Because they have been chosen in free and fair elections, they are meant to represent the will of the citizens. They play an important role in all important decisions: for example, in the making of laws (
legislation) or supervising the government. One could say that, in parliamentarianism – in constrast with totalitarian systems -
the people determines its own destiny to a large extent.
